First K-Block Inpatient Ward Opens

The Tasmanian Health System has received a critical uplift with the opening of the first 28 inpatient beds on K10E on Thursday, 23 April 2020.

K10E is part of the general and respiratory medicine precinct in K-Block Level 10.

More beds are available and will open in the 34-bed capacity ward to respond to patient demand.

K-Block has been designed to Australian Health Facilities Guidelines with clinical input every step along the way.

It has more bed capacity, more operating and procedure rooms and modern hospital features and equipment.

Patients in K-Block can see magnificent views across Hobart because inpatient rooms are designed around the perimeter of the building.

They can also enjoy more privacy in K-Block with one- and two-bed rooms the focus and four-bed wards a thing of the past.

The safety of patients and staff is our priority and K-Block has been designed using best practice control infection prevention and control measures.

Patients are now using K-Block’s admissions and departure services in the spacious light-filled Ground Floor complete with outside gardens and a suspended glass sculptural installation in the main foyer.

We are continuing to monitor the COVID-19 situation daily and will remain flexible in the use of health infrastructure to best meet the health needs of Tasmanians.

The sequence and opening of more wards and services over coming weeks will continue to be reviewed in light of the Tasmanian Health Service’s COVID-19 preparedness.

General and Respiratory Medicine on J2 will also remain open at this stage.
